Document Summary
Chapter 10 prevention and promotion: implementing programs. 2005 meta-analysis reviewed 46 drug prevention programs funded by the. U. s. samhsa: programs targeted high-risk children and teens using a wide variety of approaches: in-class instruction, refusal skills, recreation-oriented, mean effect size was 0. 02, and 21 of the 46 sites had negative effect sizes. Differences in programs: behavioral, skills-based, theory-based programs were more effective (consistent with table 9. 2) Methodological problems: control groups were not really control groups. Estimated effect size rose to 0. 24 when these issues were accounted for statistically: well-implemented and well-designed prevention works. Cookbook approach: kits that were supposed to give step-by-step replication; common in the 1970s. Replication of programs: program experts would train staff in specific settings; some room for adaptation to setting. Adaptation of programs: understood that programs needed to be adapted to settings, ideally by having the program developer as a consultant.
