Aging and identity: how women face later life transitions. Most current research on aging and women derives from medical model (ex menopause) or fails to examine the roles women play outside the home in the workplace and community. This study is based on cross sectional data comparing women and men across the adult years. Double standard: dual stereotypes faced by aging women of ageism and sexism. Women in our culture gain value based on appearanc and as they age move further away from what is valued. Woc: multiple jeopardy, the combined impact of ageism, sexism, and racism. Broad biopsychosocial self desiginition encompassing individual"s self representation in areas of physical functioning, cognition, personality, relationships, occupation, social roles. Women are more likely to use identity accomodation throughout adulthood than are men. For women only, identity assimilation is positively related to self esteem and age. For both sexes, identity accomodation is negatively related to age.
