PS375 Lecture 13: TRANSITIONS AS CONTEXTS FOR ID PROCESS
Document Summary
Identity process theory --> identity and experienes cale (whitbourne, 1996) Accomodation positively correlated with depression and negatively correlated with age. Assimilation and self esteem positively correlated (perhaps ignorance/avoidance is bliss) Age related changes hard to accomodate but having life long pattern of accomodation may be adaptive for older women. Focus on 4 transitions as times of change. Identity renegotiation/re-navigation/revising (1) empty nest (2) widowhood/divorce (3) relocation/downsizing (4) retirement. Diferent processes with different adaptive patterns (1) empty nest. Loss of mother role, offset by other identities. Research does not support this as a global phenomenon. Assimilation: continue role in child"s life (continue to overly mother grown child) Accomodation: family role has changed (find new hobbies etc) (2) widowhood/divorce. Adjustment can be painful, difficult, loss of wife role. If you thought you could make it work, it"ll be harder to let it go. In both cases, having the role of friend can be predictive of well-being (3) relocation/downsizing.
