PS375 Lecture 17: Three models of moving into adulthood
Document Summary
Three different models of moving into adulthood capture most of the views and experiences of young people across the research sites: (1) upward slopes, (2) turning points, and (3) cycles. Gradual establishment of adult identities is most often constructed as being linear even if slow. Path is often punctuated with notable adult moments . The gradual and growing nature of adult identity. Threshold models: one"s identity as an adult again grows linearly/gradually until some marked point at which a more complete and integrated sense of adult identity occurs. More significant than the subtle adult moments above and leave individual feeling qualitatively different/makes individuals think about themselves in new ways. These responsibilities demand fundamental shifts in both thought and behaviour and solidify one"s status as an adult. Some turning points are not even related to specific events as much as a sudden moment of awareness when reality hits .
