Document Summary

Ps 264 - lecture 5: sexual activity and aggressive behaviour are viewed as innate, two types of aggressive behaviour. Interspecific: aggressive behaviour between members of a different species: predatory attack -food getting behaviour with lack of emotionality. Buffalo group attack lion that eats calf. Mobbing is more likely to occur in already aggressive species. Intraspecific: aggressive behaviour between members of the same species: very rarely leads to death or even serious injury of the opponents, ritualized tournaments. Intraspecific aggression promotes aggressiveness as a general trait, which would be advantageous in protecting the young from potential predators. If it only happens under certain circumstances, this might explain why! Inhibit further attacks by the winner: often submissive in appearance, e. g. , fish lock their jaws in each other; folding its fins = give up gesture, e. g. , dog inhibit further aggression by rolling on their backs.
