Fear is associated with threatening circumstances: fear of physical harm, fear of failure, fear if negative social evaluation, fear of not performing well. Sources of fear of failure include: fear of shame and embarrassment, fear of devaluing one"s self esteem, fear of important others losing interest, fear of uncertain failure, fear of upsetting significant others, fear of performing poorly. Consequences: decreased enjoyment of activity, increased likelihood of failure, anxiety, possible withdrawal/dropout. Extreme sport athletes continue to participate despite fear.
