Example: western converts practicing a version of a religion without any association to the culture: new creations. Jim jones was a popular christian minister. Advocated for the integration of whites and blacks into the church = bring all ppl together under god. Ppls temple = not only ppl of both black and white, but they were poorer/lower middle class, not a positive view of the government. Concerned about the governments control over beliefs. Decided to leave the us bc they thought the government was a negative force that would force them out of their beliefs. Bought land in south america and created a large community.
