Lesson 2: What is a Social Entrepreneur Social entrepreneurs are individuals with innovative solutions to societys most pressing social problems by offering new ideas for widescale change social entrepreneurs find what is not working and solve the problem by changing the system, spreading the solution, and persuading entire societies to move in different directions. present userfriendly, understandable, and ethical ideas that engage widespread support in order to maximize the number of citizens that will stand up, seize their idea, and implement it Critical Questions: Individual Purpose and the Social Entrepreneurs Effect Social entrepreneurship places a significant amount of value on the driving motivation or purpose of individuals intrinsic desire to help others is the primary characteristic that distinguishes the social entrepreneur from the business entrepreneur Genealogy of the Entrepreneur: A Brief History entrepreneur emerged in French economic discourse during the 19th century as part of an effort to make a clear distinction between owners of capital (the bourgeoisie) and active agents of the production and circulation of goods. JeanBaptiste Say was one of the first economists to systematically use the term entrepreneur. for the French, the entrepreneur was historically conceived as a figure connected intimately to existing social and political structures, and thus could not be understood apart from an analysis of the environment in which he operated. Assumptions about Social Entrepreneurs importance and uniqueness of purpose as a driving motivator, and a common set of personality characteristics, seem to differentiate social entrepreneurs in their personality and drive they qualify social entrepreneurs as those who: 1. Use innovation to break down barriers and open new possibilities 2. Combine visions with realism 3. Use ethicsdriven creativity in problem solving 4. Exhibit a total commitment to their social change mission
