Progressive vs. reactionary: progressive want to make change; reactionary want to undo change. Looking at specific cases of rebellion and revolution this is not always the case. Intolerable gap between the social rewards people think they deserve & social rewards they expect to receive . Major theory in sociology up until 70"s-80"s. Deprivation that leads to mobilization that people who are deprived join social movements going to join social movement to end deprivation. Worst off people/poor people are going to be the ones that struggle for change. Empirical proof lacking: hard to prove this always works.
