Way of ranking large groups of people into a hierarchy that shows their relative privileges. System where people are divided into layers according to their relative power, property and prestige. Indentured service: fuzzy line between contract and slavery - servants would serve for their master. People could not afford their ship passage, so ship captains would carry them. Ideology: developed by slave owners, system of beliefs that justifies social arrangements. British imperial act of 1833/1834 effectively abolished slavery in the british empire. Slavery was abolished in u. s. due to civil war. Known as human trafficking today: caste. Process of putting people in occupational groups. Practice endogamy: marriage within their own group, and prohi(cid:271)it i(cid:374)ter(cid:373)arriage(cid:859) India provides the best system of a caste system: clan. Individual is linked to a large network of relatives called a clan. Much more open, based on money or material possessions. Fluid boundaries social mobility moving up/down the class leader.
