Difference is a given (people are different -> subcultures) Inequality unequal opportunities: difference b/w men and women is socially constructed. Social stratification: chapter 6, primary focus in sociology: persistence patterns of social inequality, hierarchy of privileges, unequal distribution of valued resources (wealth, status power) One"s class is defined by ownership (who owns the most capital) Proletariat: class in itself -> class consciousness -> class for itself (vs. bourgeoisie) Class in itself: we can see from the outside that they all share similar qualities. Class for itself: act as one body against bourgeoisie. Multi-dimensional approach: class/ market situation, 4 main classes: Highly educated, well-paid vs. manual workers: status/prestige, party/ power. Social/cultural/symbolic -> convert back to economic not just talent, effort, education that determine social order. Unequal rewards motivate people to do the most important work they are capable of. Income: very unevenly distributed (in terms of class) Wealth: unevenly distributed, broadbent institute: wealth gap .
