Subculture group of people who share a distinctive set of values, norms and practices within a larger society . Identifiable group ex/how they talk, act, or dress. They choose to spend their time with the same people of the subculture. They talk different and other people from that subculture will understand. Example: medical jargon can talk very specifically about the human body. Shared norms and sanctions also reinforce distinctions, example positive and negative sanctions (approval) Will reject dominate norms and lifestyles and seek to be different. Must oppose something (mine craft subculture do not oppose anything) Shocking inner city conditions shocking countercultural musical form. Lack of limited legitimate opportunities, people will turn to illegitimate job positions, leads to high rates of death, crime. Police, mass media, government were labeled racist, lying oppressors. Also survived as a source of identity, self empowerment in the middle of these horrible social conditions. It did so because so many african american men were so.
