Document Summary

Deviance and crime (chapter 15 - p. 350-376) Use peerwise for next test (registration on syllabus) A person who is deviant to their personality, quality, or personal attributes. Not about biology (no point in trying to help them if they are) Completely ignores the social forces that form deviance and how it is viewed throughout different societies. Not a personality types, but a product of social circumstances. Not just inherent, but part of a broader array of social thinking. Social labelling theory (how people become viewed as deviant, once labeled they began to behave in this way. Routinely acts outside of the norm expectations of the group. Label as deviant because they engaged in certain behaviours. Offence that breaks the law, has legitimate punishments, and requires authorized intervention. That employs people to ensure that people don"t break the law and punish those that do. Correction facilities = more modern (wouldn"t bother correcting them before because they believed deviance was inherent)
