Lecture 9: studying children and pop culture: part 2. Nickelodeon is a very controversial children"s show creating tension between the network and the parents of its audience. Provided children with a sense of citizenship making them aware of political issues. Bush: go out and shop after 9/11. The belief that tech and tv lead to delinquency. Parents would not allow their children to watch zoey 101 after the lead became pregnant at 16. Child does no vote or have a political voice. Nick"s new was necessary because it allowed for children not to be disengaged from the world and world events; they are not cynical and trivial. Very diverse casts so all kids feel represented. Nickelodeon"s message board-political debate amongst kids; they get to think for themselves. After 9/11 nickelodeon asked a selected panel of youth to answer questions on how they feel about the topic.
