Pros: independence and freedom from employer constraints; able to do many jobs for many different companies and build a solid network, has more flexible hours. Cons: lack of employment security and wage, risk of not getting paid, lower income and more vulnerable. 4 main perspectives on the nature of the employee and employer relationship: Neo classical: (see note book for more detail) Basically, the idea that firms and corps should be completely in control over the market; supply and demand should be controlled by the firms, and governments should have little to 0 influence on the market. Similar to the neo classical idea of less government and more firms control. Emphasizes a community of interest between employer and employee. Idea of a presence of imbalance of power, therefore a balance is needed between efficiency and equity (econ 1000) Believes in government control and policies need to be enforced, unionization and bargaining power.
