Document Summary

The ability to change is central to the success of any organizations and it is critical to understand what factors in the organization"s environment dictate the need for change. In the times of the 1950"s or the 1970"s, employment actually meant security. The dominant model was long- term employment stability. A change to this employment contract occurred during the 1980"s and the age of downsizing began with organizations beginning to lay off employees. There are also been a change with regard to the pattern of career movement within an organization. Traditionally, employees attempted to move up the corporate hierarchy throughout their career. However, the flattening or many organizational hierarchies has tended to substitute the vertical movement to horizontal movements. So, you might move around an organization into different areas rather than directly up the hierarchy. Organizations must adapt to changes as competition evolves in markets from fragmented and fast growing to concentrated and declining.
