BIOL 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Venomous Snake, Cactus, Biogeography
Document Summary
Studies the relationship between the distribution of living organisms: look at patterns, observe that organisms that are more closely related if they are closer in geographical sense. Darwin found that organisms in same in enviro (i. e. cold: britain and mountains both cold enviro) are less likely to related than those organisms that are closer geographically (i. e. warm enviro: south america and the tropics) What do hummingbirds, rattlesnakes and cacti have in common: they are only found in the americas. Other parts of the world have other similar birds, poisonous snakes and plants like these three but are not related: they are considered endemic. Ex rattlesnakes are endemic to the americas. It ignores alien species that have been introduced to new areas: hummingbirds, rattlesnakes and cacti are restricted to the tropics. Looking at similarities between organisms: this is attributed to organisms that are similarities because of a common ancestor, similar attributes could be modi ed for different uses.
