Document Summary

Atoms make up all mater, consume space, consists of one or more elements. An element is a substance that cannot be broken down by chemical means into other substances. Some elements do not have an exacts atomic mass number, ex. Carbon is 12. 0112 this is because there are isotopes (different forms) of the element. 12. 0112 is the average of all forms of the mass of carbon. Radioactive isotopes are unstable atoms that emit radioactive energy as they break down to stable forms. Atoms are organized into molecules, 2 or more chemically joined atoms. Compounds are molecules of 2 or more elements. The number and distribution of electrons determines whether atoms react with one another. Electrons exist in energy shells of various distances from the atom"s nucleus. The valence shell is the farthest from the nucleus and it determines bonding. Unpaired electrons form bonds with other atoms. Atoms are most stable when their valence shell is full.
