BIOL 2020 Lecture Notes - Lecture 31: Biliary Tract, Bilirubin, Hepatocyte

10 views2 pages

Document Summary

Partial cholestasis partial buildup of bile, so not all the bilirubin can get out of the hepatocyte, and a lesser amount can get to the gut. You might think that less urobilinogen (means better handling by liver), but remember the backup flow of bile impairs the liver. So, the liver cell is impaired secondarily to the partial chomestasis. So, thus the ability to take up the bilinogen is more impaired. The majority of biliary tract will be obstructed, and marker enzymes for biliary tract obstruction will rise (alp, 5"-nto and ggt will rise). The bilirubin can"t get out of the biliary tract as readily as usual, so you have a rise in bilirubin and a rise in the marker enzymes for the biliry tract cholestasis. Because it is mainly a biliary tract problem, the marker enzymes of hepatociliary leakage don"t dominate (ast and alt will be normal or slightly elevated), and there won"t be a major insult to the albumin.
