Document Summary

Metabolism of fatty acids and amino acids. Metabolism: the total of all chemical reactions in the cell. Some harvest energy and provide or store it for the cell to use. Summary of known chemical reactions in the cell: note how many there are, note how inter connected they are. Non-photosynthetic organisms: energy derives from fat and/or carbohydrates. All organisms are either autotrophs or heterotrophs. !1: use atmospheric co2 as carbon source, most use light (from the sun) as the source of energy, use carbon and energy to produce organic compounds. Heterotrophs: feeding on others : carbon source is obtained from complex organic molecules such as glucose, obtain energy by degrading carbohydrates or fat. Recall: chemical reactions don"t happen in isolation: each chemical reaction is shown as an arrow from substrate to product, e above arrow shows that each chemical reaction is catalyzed by an enzyme.
