Document Summary

Lecture 13 cell communication chapter 15 part 3: last lecture we discussed g protein coupled receptors in more detail, more specifically we considered that if the target of the g protein is an enzyme, second messenger molecules may be produced, however, what if the target of the g protein is an ion channel, lets consider this possibility before we move on to the second type of cell surface receptors; enzyme coupled receptors. G protein coupled receptors: g protein regulation of ion channels , g proteins can activate (or de activate) ion channels by, g proteins bind directly to the ion channel in the plasma membrane of the target cell, activating or inactivating it, thereby altering the ion permeability and hence the electrical excitability of the membrane, other g proteins regulate the activity of ion channels indirectly, by causing the production or destruction of cyclic nucleotides that directly activate or inactivate ion channels.
