BIOL 2050 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Dall Sheep, Life Table, Fecundity
Document Summary
Life tables can be used to project future age structure, size, and growth rate of a pop"n. Pop"n size can be determined by density-dependent and density-independent factors. Survival rate (sx) --> chance that an individual of age x will survive to age x+1. Survirvoship (ix) --> proprotion of individuals that survive from birth to age x. Fecundity (fx) --> average number of offspring a female will have at age x cohort table (involves age) vs static life table (i. e all drivers in canada) Type i: most individuals survive to old age (dall sheep, humans). Type ii: the chance of surviving remains constant throughout the lifetime (some birds). Type iii: high death rates for young; those that reach adulthood survive well (species that produce a lot of offspring). In terms of conservation survivorships tell you which life stage (baby-adult) to spend more time focusing on/protecting in relation to death rate. Suvivorship curves can vary among species, gender, pop"ns, environmental conditions.
