Document Summary

In this course we will take an academic approach to the study of religion. University is a secular institution and religious studies is an academic discipline that draws upon methodologies from other humanistic and social scientific disciplines, including, but not limited to, philosophy, anthropology, and sociology. A theological approach to the study of religion, on the other hand, presupposes the existence of god. The term theology" derives from the greek words theos or god and logos, so the word theology literally means the study of god. If you were studying to become a catholic priest in a seminary, or a rabbi in a yeshiva, you would be taking a theological approach to the study of religion. Here we are not interested in proving or disproving the existence of god, but rather in understanding the various ways of being religious across the world"s cultures. First of all, it means to approach the study of religion as an empathetic outsider.
