Document Summary

Demographic studies follow known individuals of different ages and sizes in a population to determine their rates of growth, reproduction, and survival. Population viability analysis- estimates the ability of a population to persist in the future. Need to know time frame and degree of security. Start with deterministic base model(age and population distribution and birth and death rates) Recovery criteria(rc)- predetermined thresholds that signal that an endangered species can be removed from protection. Minimum viable population(mvp)- the # of individuals necessary to ensure long-term survival. Minimum dynamic area- area of suitable habitat necessary to maintain the mvp. Source populations-core populations with fairly stable numbers. Shifting mosaic of occupancy(blinking in and out) Eliminating a few core areas can have huge implications over a much wider area. Ex-situ principle of maintaining biodiversity in captivity or offsite. In the face of increasing human pressure, relying solely on in-situ conservation may not be viable for some species.
