BIOL 4310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Circadian Clock, Cryptochrome, Pupa
Document Summary
Lecture 14 march 5 - antennal circadian clocks coordinate sun compass orientation in migratory monarch butterflies. Monarch butterflies: scientific name: danaus plexippus, life span: 6- 8 months, Weight: 0. 0095 to 0. 026 ounces, smaller than a teacup. Life cycle: lay 1 egg at a time many times throughout the day on milkweed, hatches into larvae. Will eat and grow for 2 weeks (moults 5 times), starts metamorphosis at pupal stage. Goes into chrysalis phase for 10 days, clear outside = end of pupal stage. Every fall monarch butterflies travel from northern us & southern canada to central. Mexico (during september-nov fly 4000 km south), spend the winter in mexico, come back north during spring (start reproducing when they come back) Necessary for migration: at noon in ontario, sun is in the south therefore fly towards sun. At 6am sun is in east, therefore to fly south need to keep sun on left-hand side while flying.
