BIOL 4380 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Radiodensity, Sensory Neuron
Document Summary
Allowed creating the map of cortex, we measure electrical signals right outside of the neurons as they"re applied certain sensory stimuli to various regions of the body. Event related potential analysis: non invasive, we"re measuring electrical activity outside of the cranium. It"s a very low resolution method and doesn"t allow any kind of mapping of much of anything. This method uses neither radioactivity nor electrical stimulation, instead net electrical activity from each point in the scalp electrode array is detected, amplified and mapped with reference to each electrode"s position on the head. Individuals are presented with sensory stimuli or directed to execute a motor task, and time locked electroencephalographic signals are averaged with respect to stimulus or task onset. It appears to have some potential to treat depression. Very transient, and doesn"t have any long lasting negative effects. The stronger magnetic field will activate more neurons in the region.
