Lecture 25
Why do we need Biological Catalysts?
Half life of peptide bonds in vitro is about 20 years.
Only ½ of peptide bonds hydrolyzed by water after 20
years.
What if we want to recycle? How can we make it happen?
As Temp Increases, Living organisms can only tolerate so
much
As [reactants] increases, it may be scarce inside cell
Adding a catalyst: speeds up reaction but it is not
consumed in process. (Regenerated in the end)
Enzymes as Catalysts
- Biological Catalysts: Not permanently altered or
consumed
speed up the reaction and are not consumed in the
process
