COMN 2200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Penny Press, Mass Media, Financialization
Document Summary
The term mass media itself coined in relationship to the radio in the 1920s. Mass media is any means of communication that is designed to reach a very large audience, typically a nation. Mass media tends to be talked down. The message comes from the top and received by a large number of people at the bottom of the pyramid as opposed to bilateral media. Technologies have a profound effect on how we communicate/what we communicate. Effect the nature of communication (messages) itself. Have a profound impact on social and political discourse. Technological mediation of communication shapes the message: industrialization. Shift from craft model to massive industrial enterprises with huge presses initially run by steam engines. More organized way of producing newspaper: business management. In terms of industry, there were fewer players (barriers to entry much higher) - meant a lot more money was required.
