Document Summary

Objectives: social representative of race and crime, racialization of crime and the, criminalization of race , dilemmas of definition and measurement, explaining the race- crime link, differential offending, racial discrimination. Two concepts that will be on the final exam, the first concept is the racialization of crime and the second is the criminalization of race. these two concepts are fundamentally connected you cannot have one without the other. The starting point of thinking about the connection between race and crime is the need to ask ourselves what is race. what do we mean by that term and how is it use etc. Then this leads to the question how race is understood historically. One approach that continues to present day but was really powerful in the late 1800s was the biology view of race which was the tendency to view race as a reflection of fundamental biological difference between people.
