Don"t require researchers to come into direct contact with their participants, such as documentaries. The act of observing someone doesn"t have an impact on the person being observed or the subject. This involves some kind of documentary research in which documents are observed. It could range from government documents, databases, personal documents, such as diaries, archives, historical research, etc. Up until 1961, first nations peoples had very few civil liberties. If one wanted to study elements and power of social control of the indian act, they could study. Indian agents, which had immense powers over the people on the reserves they were supervising. The real value of unobtrusive research is that it generates nonreactive data, data that is created or generated without the individual reacting to the research (?) It is highly unlikely that if one is interested in studying gangs, they could infiltrate themselves into the street gangs. They study graffiti, tagging; communication through signs and symbols.
