CRIM 3657 Lecture 5: CRIM 3657 - Lecture #5
Document Summary
Vulnerabilities/risks increased by homelessness: mortality and suicide; substance abuse; mental and physical ill health; violent victimization: constantly exposed, more at risk to elements and victimization, criminalization and victimization are related. In public spaces: routine activities theory, few ties to conventional institutions weak social capital, little guardianship more attractive targets of crime. Perception of homeless youth as risky exacerbates social exclusion: also commits a lot of crime. Social exclusion: inadequate/limited access to shelter, employment, social capital, public space: limited control over their surroundings. Rejection of dichotomous view of victims vs. offender. V-c continuum is gendered: male youth more likely criminally involved; female youth more likely to be victimized. Race/socio-economic class + stigmatized attribute = profile = type of person. Social profiling triggering of police intervention by visible signs of poverty/marginality. Discriminatory enforcement: tickets for panhandling, jaywalking, squeegeeing. Reticent to contact police when victimized; do not feel protected in cjs as witnesses, e. e. , family violence.
