Gothic fiction flips the dominant binary logic. Gothic fiction and the romantic movement was a resistance against the enlightenment. They were a reaction against the complete scientific rationalization of nature. Enlightenment thought that science could help us understand nature. The way that the gothic writers evoked the emotion of horror was through the figure of the monster, the idea of irrationality and digression. The reason why we should care about a cultural battle is because we have inherited the same building blocks of social construction.
