Portraits of identity. in d. yon, elusive culture: schooling, race and. [on moodle: maple heights runs a program called "positive peer culture" (ppc) that brings together gro ups of students to talk about social issues, personal interests, and concerns. Discussions are based on the principle of group counseling, which means sharing concerns and developing strategies for reflecting upon and dealing with the anxieties, problems, and dilemmas that a re brought to the group. Students in the ppc are given a social studies credit toward their hi gh school diploma. In the year i spent at the school, there were five such groups ranging in size from ten to fifteen students. A teacher is assigned to work with a group, and students either enroll voluntarily, are reco mmended by a teacher, or are invited to join by a past or present member.
