What kind of poem will have an impact on everything else. Then begin to start talking about what the poem is about. Form is often based on meter and rhyme. Intertext: when people write they are in conversation with other people with writings like their own, they are always referencing what has come before, each author is innovating what they have inherited/what has come before. As a critic your job is to expand the poem, it is already condensed. The speaker of the poem is not necessarily the poet. Poets create a persona, a fictional creation of a character that speaks for them. Resist the temptation to say the poet believes this , as the speaker might believe it but the poet might not.
