Document Summary

Enlightenment, neo-classical period 1660 around 1780 in england. Emphasis on reason; reason was seen as the predominant ruling aspect- traditionally gendered as male; men had the most to contribute to society because they had more reason than women- skepticism and science. Democracy and equality to human beings- coming to realize that women may be equal. Interest in psychology and social structure not democratic; rigid class divisions. Humour (in comedy and satire) predominates in literature. A novel is a book-length work of realistic prose fiction; something that is made up, but can happen in reality without any supernatural factors. Only 3 novels on course: pride and prejudice, the barnabys in america, the colour. Purple and maybe frankenstein (but it is purposely ambiguous) Pride and prejudice targets the critiques of marriage.
