Document Summary

We are going to have a reading quiz on beowulf. We looked at the confessional poets last week. Often talked about issues pertaining to themselves, either literally or figuratively. You see yourself as a reflection of society as a whole. By going inwards you sometimes perceive a universal truth. The part equals the whole; the individual equals the society. To deal with universal truths, but not to lose sight of the individual fact, but to come into great truths. Written in old english, a very specific term. Old english is pretty much a different language; shakespeare was writing in modern. Middle english we touch on in the canterbury tales. No separation between religion and poetry at that time. To spread the praise of god and tell of god"s wonders. Poets are articulate enough to write about god, and there is something special about the poet. The poet has some sort of knowledge he can spread.
