The new negro movement (harlem renaissance) a literary movement with ties to what goes on socially and politically. She and other writers following this movement kept close ties to progressive white publishers and readers. Criticized for being scandalous; felt as though he did not portray the african american community in a positive light; he showed them the way they were: human. Poems celebrating the rhythms, variety and spontaneity of african american speeches. Shifting from the blues to jazz; combined the two art forms for uniqueness. African american artists should follow their own instincts rather than following/working inside of the white dominant culture. Usually universal not just about one person"s feelings/opinion. Constantly changing and revolving structure (not fixed) going from iambic trimeter -> tetrameter -> pentameter-> monometer. Address a more explicitly white populace, offering a challenge and critique. Begins with facts that do not allow questioning. Repetition of steel bars and tired now showing an unsatisfying release.
