Jeremiah and gabriel: different approaches to catholicism, they are having a fight about religion, gabriel: catholicism now that is an image of the savage and the cross as a torture device, novel encourages people to feel uncomfortable. Jeremiah: he likes catholicism and contemplates becoming a priest; he feels like he"s accepted by the catholics: opposite extremes, they have no middle ground, catholic images are also intermingled with images of violence, sex and sexuality. Spends two years living alone in winnipeg without friends or family before. Gabriel comes to join him: differences between jeremiah"s time alone and his fathers". Jeremiah is isolated and alienated but his father has peace in isolation. Father still had a spiritual connection to the land and the earth. He can hunt for months at a time alone in the wilderness.
