EN 2220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Rohinton Mistry, Xenophobia, Zong Massacre
Document Summary
Ship captain threw over 100 slaves to collect insurance money. Insurance sued him so they didn"t have to pay. Slaves were taken to fortresses and housed for months. Separated by gender, age, and linguistic groups. Taken through door of no return and taken to slave ships to go to america. People came in with a culture and identity and left fragmented. How do cultural producers represent this distribution. Trips took months and sometimes people chained before the ship sailed. People couldn"t sit up or pee and were chained together. Man looks like the bow of the ship and the water waves around. Painting hard to understand because it"s not a literal painting. No division between the sea and the horizon. Ship is going towards the storm with the masts down. Chains don"t float but here they are sticking up out of the water. The fragmented body with beasts and the leg in the corner.
