Tends to be normative: shared norms, values, expectations, depend on particular cultures, moments in history. Childhood is a somewhat a myth -> changing ideal. Everyday challenging assumption that there is a universal childhood (is not: no universal idea of what it means to be a child, variety of ideas on the subject. War, famine, natural disaster, ethnicities, religion, etc. impact childhood. When reading: thinking about intended audience, purpose, etc. Nostalgia: longing for the past, gets in the way of accuracy. Children seen as impressionable, vulnerable (not so much), innocent. Change in media created more awareness of dangers. Debate over censorship of children, what should be censored.
