1970"s, during cold war between america and russia, historians studied the fall of the british. There are always many environmental stresses that act as central cause of collapse of complex, yet vulnerable societies. Famous for vast, staring sculptures of elongated heads that dot the island. 900 statues remain; there are many half-finished statues (shows that the culture was abruptly abandoned) The island was very isolated, located in the middle of pacific ocean. Other islands and archipelagos in the pacific had somewhere else to go or had places from which they could import resources. Settled by variety of migrations by polynesian tribes and was covered in dense palm trees. Island was volcanic, drainage was poor, limited rainfall and discontinuous streams. Very few indigenous species of plants and only one or two indigenous animals (lack of biodiversity) Very few fishing grounds settlers depended on imported domesticated crops. Potatoes became single mainstay crop and the settlers domesticated animals.
