Five principles of film form: function, similarity and repetition, difference and variation, development, unity / disunity. Experimental film made in 1943 by a husband and wife. Flower, knife, key, pathway, humming noise, record player, shadows and silhouettes: function. How does this element cue us to respond: similarity & repetition. Motif a significant repeated element in a film. e. g: object, colour, place, person, sound, character, trait, camera position, lighting cue, etc. Maya the girl repeats actions 4 or 5 times. Flower triggers emotions of innocence and vulnerability. Key used to unlock turns to knife which represents that knife is a key to freedom. Stairs reflection of emotions (changed with her emotions). Themes: obsession, being trapped, fear, sexuality, innocence: difference & variation. Works in close relation to similarity and repetition. It is only against a background of similarity and repetition, we can notice difference and. Patterns of similarity and difference usually progress through the linear screen time of the film.
