Silent films were highly innovative, with lavish premiers. When sounds came, it changed everything - not only how films were made, but accommodating the technology. Hitler becomes chancellor: setting in berlin 1931 (urban area), germany has to pay reparations - wide-spread poverty, the original idea was various perspectives during this time, starring liza minelli nightclub singer actress. Musicals have an ideological message: 42nd street: teamwork and community, pulling together, cabaret: while the people of berlin are pulling together, it involves the persecution of others. Aim of revisionist cinema: to critique, reversal or satire of genre conventions and thereby make us aware of their ideological operations, and of the social values and institutions that they support. Cabaret exposes the lie of the american myth. Outsiders: louis b mayer, samuel goldwyn, jesse lasky, harry warner, harry cohn, Hollywood musicals are filled with outsiders trying to make it or belong.
