Document Summary

Lecture 9 post colonial cinema from cuba, vietnam, and algeria. Cuba and algeria represent a counterpoint to the other films we"ve seen post wwii. Cuban revolution was organized around nationalist and socialist demands. Cuba was liberated from the spanish empire by the united states. Cuban governments were formally independent but dependent on the united states. The revolution was dramatically important in latin america in the 1950s. Cuba was called a fishbone in the teeth of the american government. Cuban film institute was inspired by the soviets who had their own film board that organized state filmmaking to use film for educational purposes in midst of a revolution. The lineage comes from italian neo-realism and many famous cuban directors were working with the italians in the 50s. Cuban films also have connections to soviety documentaries. Cuban film institute first focused on documentaries, and then they went towards feature films.
