Octave"s father is returning to marry him to geronte"s daughter. Octave and silvestre go to scapin (leandre"s servant) for help. Scapin is smart and has skills, but vowed to never help again due to a quarrel with justice . When their fathers left, leandre fell in love with a gipsy girl. One day they go by a house and hear sobbing, octave sees inside a girl (hyacintha) grieving her mother"s death, falls in love. Octave must marry the girl to be allowed with her, so he does. Octave is now in an unfortunate situation where he is already married but his father is intending on marrying him to someone else when he gets back. Octave and hyacintha manage to get scapin to help, puts their trust in him. Scapin confronts argante (octave"s father) and says that octave did no wrong in marrying. Argante says he will disinherit octave if he doesn"t say he wasn"t married of free will.
