November 2, 2016: the arab spring: spaces of protest & political transformation. Largescale wave of political demonstrations, protests & upheaval: largely centered around demands for democracy (2011-2012 & onwards: started with bouazizi suicide, tunisia, egypt, syria. The name arab spring : arab=predominantly arab speaking countries, spring=ref. to prague spring. Causes: concerns of the concentration/distribution of wealth by leaders, concerns about food, lack of responsibility taken by the government. Demands: more democratic governments, contradictory demand-more secular/religious governments. Cyber space: cyber space as a digital world, an online community (defined by networks) Silent protest against police brutality on the nile river, egypt: crux=cyberspace helps enable political organizing, helped bring down pres. Hosni mubarak-regime change: what so special about cyber space. Ability to share a lot of information. Public space: space to which all citizens have a right of access, archetypical public space=the plaza/ public square, parks, the street, space of the public sphere.
