Forests
South Asia Forests
● Pre Colonial forest 60%, now 20%
● Today, trends in forests today, forest cover has stabilized or is increasing
slightly; no more deforestation
East Asia
● 20% forest cover, a lot of China is desert and grasslands
● 70% of Japan is forests
Southeast Asia
● Forest cover used to be 70-80%.
● The majority of the population lived in concentrated areas on rivers, and
islands with rich soil
● Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam - forest cover stabilized
● A few countries where forests are being lost
Forest Simplification
Deforestation
● Is logging deforestation, no
● The forest grows back
● Forest Farming
● Forest fires regenerate forests
● When a piece of forest is used for a purpose that isn’t forest.
● A Permanent conversion to non-forest land use
Tropical Forests
● Apes in forests
● Not the only kind of tropical forests, something missing
● Forests are home to millions
● Population density is low, but they are Anthropogenic
● Forests can be managed for wildlife, fire creates fields for wildlife to graze
● Bamboo, resins, mushrooms, timbre
● Forest Farming
○ Swidden Farming
○ Take a piece of forest, secondary forest, slash it down and burn it to
release nutrients. By burning it you release nutrients from the
vegetation. Then you will plant root crops and fruit. You cannot farm it
for very long. You allow the forest to regrow and regenerate, repeat
process.
Document Summary
Today, trends in forests today, forest cover has stabilized or is increasing slightly; no more deforestation. 20% forest cover, a lot of china is desert and grasslands. The majority of the population lived in concentrated areas on rivers, and islands with rich soil. Philippines, thailand, vietnam - forest cover stabilized. A few countries where forests are being lost. When a piece of forest is used for a purpose that isn"t forest. A permanent conversion to non-forest land use. Not the only kind of tropical forests, something missing. Population density is low, but they are anthropogenic. Forests can be managed for wildlife, fire creates fields for wildlife to graze. Take a piece of forest, secondary forest, slash it down and burn it to release nutrients. By burning it you release nutrients from the vegetation. Then you will plant root crops and fruit. You allow the forest to regrow and regenerate, repeat process.
