The Garifuna
● The Arawak, Carib
● Spanish colonize, find they are unable to control the indigenous
● Two ships full of African slaves ended up on an island and mixed with indigenous
people; then called the black Caribs
● British managed to take over the island, moved the black caribs to an island off of
Honduras, spread from these islands to Honduras
● Around 100,000 identify as Garifuna, 90,000 live on the coast
● Music strongly influenced by African music, very popular

○ All countries signed on to this were responsible to uphold the law
○ Not Comfortable with this law: New Zealand, Australia, United States, Canada
○ Why? They did not like the part about FPIC; concern it would give Indigenous
people veto rights on land development
○ Liberals come in; Trudeau removes their objector status; may talk a lot of nice
things, not following through on the ground
○ Not ‘consent’ but consultation
