Increase in average temperature of the world: due to the release of carbon dioxide (since industrial revolutions, co2 thickens the atmosphere, allowing less heat to escape, greenhouse effect due to solar radiation. Causes of global warming: fossil fuels primarily through vehicles, burning coals for energy (50%, ozone (25%, cows (16%, fertilizers release nitrous oxide (5%) Climate change and pacific islands: lost arable and usable land, damaged coral, polluted freshwater, damages fisheries. 3 major movements: asia to melanesia, east to polynesia, north to micronesia. Pacific islands: fiji: consists of both atolls and high islands, advertised as a friendly tourist destination, colonized by british in late 1800s to grow sugar canes. Imported 16000 indian workers for sugar cane labour: schools for fijians were publically funded; indo-fijians had to pay, sugar cane lands were not allowed to be owned by indo-fijians. Indo-fijians opened up many stores to fund themselves.
