A shared set of meanings that are lived through the material and symbolic practices of life . A culture, which is to say a suite of practices so ingrained as to be ritualistic : civilized is associated with non nomadic lifestyle, organization and written word. Practises that both produce and represent civilization: culture is associated with institutions, govt (parliament) set laws, religion a set of shared beliefs. Family is a social institution: marriage, not all institutions are obvious, language, structure, grammar, slang, vocabulary, order of words. Symbol, associated with an idea: different practises= different culture, mapping is an effective way to understand culture.
